The Best Fish and Chips in Edinburgh
No trip to the United Kingdom would be complete without having Fish and Chips at least once. On my recent trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, I took it upon myself to search for the best fish and chips in the city.
I ordered fish and chips at a fancy hotel restaurant ( I know, I know) and a plate at a local pub (much better), but honestly, I still wasn’t overwhelmed with excitement. So, I started asking around by chatting with locals and tourists alike and heard one thing repeatedly: “You’ve got to go to Berties.” So, I did.
One word. Delicious. Okay, I need a few more words! It has a super fun vibe, incredible food, good drinks, and decent prices. If you are in Edinburgh, head to Berties for lunch.

If you can get a table upstairs by the window, you’ll have awesome views of Edinburgh.
I started with the haggis spring rolls, which were actually delicious, even though it sounds like quite an unlikely pairing. However, something about the fusion of the spices from the meat and the sweet chili sauce and vegetables really worked well together.

I considered ordering a whisky drink because, when in Scotland, I ultimately decided to have a little fun and go with the cotton candy martini. It was a fun mix of vodka, lemon, and cranberry juice that I got to pour over a mound of cotton candy. The liquid melted the sugar into the drink, creating a sweet cocktail.

When the fish and chips came out, my jaw literally dropped. In the US, we are normally presented with 2-3 small fish pieces and a handful of fries when we order fish and chips. Not so here! This massive piece of fish was bigger than my hand and covered the entire plate.
The breading was crispy and delicious. There was not too much breading, but it was enough to add the perfect crunch. The fish inside was flaky and done to absolute perfection. The tartar sauce was lemony, fresh, and super delicious.

The fries were great, too, and there was more food than I could eat.
The location of Berties is another thing that makes it a great find! It’s located on Victoria Street, which is said to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. While walking Victoria Street, stop at Isle of Skye Candle Company for an awesome souvenir and pop into the Harry Potter shop as well.
If you don’t want to sit and eat, you can order takeaway, but honestly, I’m not sure if the fish would get soggy if you didn’t eat it right away.
Although Berties is famous for fish and chips, if that’s not your thing, you can still hang out and enjoy the atmosphere of the place. They also serve burgers, steak pies, and vegan options.
