The Best Spots to Grab a Beer in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh has undergone a huge transformation in the past few decades, emerging as a vibrant hub for craft beer enthusiasts. The city’s rich industrial heritage and passionate community have fostered a thriving beer scene. Whether you’re a seasoned craft beer connoisseur or simply looking for a great pint at a well-loved beer joint, Pittsburgh has something to offer everyone.

Must-Visit Breweries

If you only have a short time to visit Pittsburgh, put these breweries on your must-visit list:

Church Brew Works

Housed in a historic desanctified church in Lawrenceville, this iconic brewery offers a unique atmosphere and a wide selection of well-crafted beers. Its signature Pious Monk Dunkel is a local favorite. If you work up an appetite while you’re there, CW offers an extensive food menu as well.

A pioneer of the Pittsburgh craft beer scene, East End Brewing Company consistently delivers high-quality brews. Their lineup includes crowd-pleasers like the popular Big Hop American Ale and the Hefe Weizen.

Dancing Gnome Brewery

Known for its innovative and experimental beers, Dancing Gnome has quickly gained a cult following. Its Etch, a solid IPA, and cool, unique beers, including the fun
Jam Yam (a core IPA conditioned on real yams) are not to be missed.

Grist House Craft Brewery

Located in the trendy Millvale neighborhood of the city, Grist House focuses on creating balanced and flavorful beers. Its taproom boasts a welcoming atmosphere and a rotating selection of delicious brews no matter what time of year you visit. If you’re all about wild ales, test drive Acid Wash.

Allegheny City Brewing Company

This North Side brewery offers diverse beers, from classic styles to experimental concoctions. Additionally, the spacious taproom is perfect for enjoying a pint with friends. Offering 12 taps at any given time, you can never go wrong with one of its IPAs.

These spots don’t commit to just one beer brand; they spread the brewing love with plenty of styles and larger spaces.

Mike’s Beer Bar

Mike’s Beer Bar is a local beer lover’s paradise with an impressive selection of over 300 beers (50 local beers always on tap!). Its knowledgeable staff can help you navigate the extensive menu and find the perfect beer to suit your taste.

Fat Head’s Saloon

This popular chain on the South Side (a super hip area of the city) offers a solid selection of craft beers on tap and delicious pub fare. It’s a great spot to catch a game or several on the television and enjoy a cold one.

Jack’s

If you want an authentic Pittsburgh bar experience, Jack’s on the South Side is THE place to go, in my humble opinion. The vibe hasn’t changed in decades, and that’s what people love most about it. It’s one of the oldest hometown bars in the city, and you’ll not only find plenty of taps, you’ll find its regulars fun and welcoming.
